  • 1.  Country Drop Down - United States of America (Minor Outlying Islands)

    Posted 16 days ago

I've recently noticed a growing issue within the registration experience related to the country selection dropdown and wanted to see if others are running into the same thing.

Since an update last year, a significant number of attendees based in the United States are mistakenly selecting "United States of America (Minor Outlying Islands)" instead of the primary U.S. option. This is happening quite frequently and is starting to impact the accuracy of attendee data.

From what I can tell, the confusion stems from how the options are labeled and displayed. The primary country is listed as "USA", while the alternate option is spelled out as "United States of America (Minor Outlying Islands)". When users begin typing "United States…", the only visible match is the Minor Outlying Islands option. Because "United States of America" isn't listed in full as a standalone option, many users assume they've found the correct selection and choose it-especially if they don't think to search for "USA."

This creates a pretty unintuitive experience and leads to avoidable data inaccuracies.

A simple fix would be to update the main country listing from "USA" to "United States of America" so it aligns with user expectations and is easier to find when typing.

Curious if others have seen this as well, and if there are any workarounds in the meantime?

This has been a huge issue for us too. Even those who submit MRFs with us, and have been for years, regularly miss it.

Agreed.  The inconsistency is the problem.  Need to change one or the other, so that the autofill will be more sensible.

This has been a problem for us recently as well because when people would go to register their computer wanted to auto-fill the address fields based on what they had stored in their browser but it wasn't matching up with the option in the cvent list.   However I'm pretty sure I saw in the latest product release notes that this is being fixed with the next batch of product updates!  Now regardless of if you start typing United States or USA, it will pull up USA as an option to select!  I believe that is happening this week!

This is so annoying for us as well. need to fix one by one. Looks like a minor thing to fix in the database...

Here to say we have the same issue. Since we are only domestic in our events currently, we've been removing the "Minor Outlying Islands" option from the picklist in Site Designer each time we build an event. We had a big issue with the data syncing into our SF database incorrectly because people were choosing the wrong one.

We also have this exact issue. This seems like it should be on the top of Cvent's list of things to adjust as it then makes our stats inaccurate, or we have to manually fix the choice for those who choose United States Minor Outlying Islands instead of USA as they can't choose state.

I have 336 people that selected United States of America (Minor Outlying Islands) in one event!  And it defaults to USA!  This is a huge problem!

    Hi Sara,

A solution for this is included in the Product Releases for April 8, 2026. I have included the information below.

Easier Discovery of "USA" in Country Dropdowns

To reduce friction in forms and align with how attendees naturally search for countries, the country dropdown now makes "USA" significantly easier to find when "United States"–style terms are entered in searchable country fields.

    Why It Matters

    • Attendees who type "United States" or similar phrases now immediately see "USA" in the filtered results instead of scrolling through the full list.

    • Reduces the risk of incorrect country selection, supporting cleaner location data without requiring configuration changes.

    What's New

Enhanced search behavior for "USA" in country dropdowns that support type‑ahead search:

    • Typing phrases and partials such as "United States", "United", "USA", "America", or "States" returns "USA" in the filtered list of options.

    • Existing behavior for all other countries (labels, ordering, and search results) remains unchanged.

    Things to Know

    No changes to stored values

    • The display label for the option remains "USA".

    • The stored country value and code are unchanged, so reporting, integrations, and business rules continue to function as before.
