  • 1.  Fraudulent Registrations: How Are You Handling Them?

    Posted 01-23-2025 12:01
    Hi everyone,
I'm curious to know how many of you are experiencing fraudulent or suspicious registrations in your events. What processes or safeguards do you have in place to identify and handle them?

If you have any tips, strategies, or best practices, please share! I'd appreciate any advice for those of us encountering this issue.

    Thank you!

    Hi Ciara,

We get them with pretty much all of our events. Some times it is very obvious, sometimes not. I just add them to the blacklist, but they just create another email.  Not really sure if it can be stopped.  Almost always a gmail address.

    Hi David,

Thank you for your comment.  Yes, Gmail almost always gives it away when you already have suspicions.  We get them in one specific conference, so I'm always on the lookout.

    Great pic! Lol

    Hi Ciara,

Thank you for brining up this question!  We get this ALL OF THE TIME!  It can be really frustrating because we do have international attendees at our events so I don't want to make an assumption and just remove any attendee from our list but it does take time to address each one.  Also to follow up with them to submit payments.  I am also curious if we are getting charged with every spam registration so it ends up costing us more due to this aspect as well.  How do you "blacklist" a registrant?

Yes indeed.  It does take off of your contracted amount.

To Blacklist - Select the contact in the attendee list > Actions > Go to Contact > Contact Groups > Edit > Select Blacklist.  If you don't have Blacklist, contact Cvent.

    Hi David!

Thanks for this helpful information!  We do not have the blacklist option and I am already putting together a list of who would be on this.  I'll reach out to see if this can be added!

    Jessica,

Go to Contacts in the App Switcher> Contact Groups > Create Contact Group > Give it a name like "Blacklist" > select Exclusion List> Select the email you want to see it > and save.

My clients have encountered this issue many times. A great way to manage it is to enable "Limit registration by IP address or email domain" under the registration path settings. You can enter the domains you want to block in the "Blocked Email Domains" text box, separating multiple domains with commas.

Another effective method is to enable "Approval Registrations Manually" for incoming registrations. This way, you can review and reject suspicious registrations before they're finalized. The best part? Rejected registrations won't count against your contract.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Amarnath!

I forgot about being able to manually approve registrations.  Thanks for the reminder!
