Hi Shelby,
There are key advantages to both UTMs and Reference IDs. UTM are powerful, allowing you to track multiple campaigns and sources to one one registration, however they are usually a little harder to implement but they have the benefit of also being compatible with embedded registration by pulling the UTM from the parent site. Reference IDs are easy to implement, you create a Cvent weblink and in the UI add a reference ID, however because these are a Cvent standard only, they are not compatible with embedded registration on your external website outside of just one reference ID associated to the widget itself.

Subject: Registration Source Tracking
Hi! I'm looking for some advice/best practices on tracking which promotional efforts/sources are driving the most registrations. The problem we are running into is that we host our event website outside of CVent. Previously, we had linked to our CVent registration page on our website, opening in a new window. This year we are exploring embedding the registration widget.
In our promotional materials, we typically link to our website (not our CVent registration page) and are hoping to find a way to track when someone clicks that link, visits our homepage and then ultimately registers in Cvent, passing this info to Cvent so we can report on it there. I've tried to read up on UTMs v. Reference ID's but am curious what other people are doing in this situation?
