  • 1.  The Container Widget --- What benefits do you see compared to sections and columns?

Is anyone using the container widget in the site designer?

I noticed that widgets in the container widget align on top whereas those in columns spread out vertically. Besides this, what other benefits are there? If anyone is using the container widgets over columns, can you tell me why you prefer them over section columns?

    Hi Etsuko!

So I tend to see the container widget used to get more creative with designing - since you can set elements like background colour and border in a container widget, you could have individually styled containers side by side whereas with the section columns you would be setting the background colour of the entire section. The containers also make it easier control spacing and lets you move around multiple widgets at a time if you wanted to reorder the way things are placed beside each other. You can also nest container widgets, so you can put a container widget inside of another container widget. I personally find it to be one of those things you need to experiment with a little to really figure out how you would want to use it - here's a little example of a nested container I have in one of my test events:

To make a long response short - they basically just give you a lot more creative freedom and can actually be used in tandem with the section columns as well!

    Allll of this!

Also, we use them to control the way the site looks from web, to mobile! Sometimes, if you have multiple columns in a web version, it doesn't stack correctly when you switch to mobile, but if it's in a container widget, the entire widget stacks! :-)

Thanks for the replies. This is VERY useful. Not sure when this was added, but a great feature! Glad we have this now.
