The way I handle this situation is to delete the current event with the wrong template and then go back to the Meeting Request Form to create a new event using the correct template.
Event Details > Event Status > Actions > Delete
For our account only Administrators have access to delete.
Hopefully you haven't gone too far in the process of updating the content because all will be lost when you delete and start over.
