    Hi Everyone!

It is my pleasure to share my Cvent CONNECT presentation for our CONNECT Highlight! This year, my session was The Hidden Value of Mobile Event AppsIt focuses on using creative best practices in event apps to create more value and deliver on attendee expectations at your events.

But first, a little background on myself and why I chose this topic! I started my career in hotel conference sales and served on the board for the International Association of Conference Centers, where I helped to plan their annual conference. While at IACC I negotiated their partnership with Cvent, and found so much value in Cvent's technology that I ended up joining the team in 2012! Since then, I've worked with hundreds of customers using CrowdCompass during my time as an Account Manager, before becoming a Manager on the Mobile Solutions team. Now, I'm able to share the best practices that I've acquired working with customers, our product development team, and our support team to help a wider audience excel in deploying event apps.

My presentation circulates around three focal points to ensure success

    1. Discover what your attendees hope to experience at your events
    1. Execute on those expectations by leveraging an event app
    1. Measure the level of success of delivering on those key attendee needs

An example of a best practice we discuss would be to create a highlighted FAQ section within your app. This will save you time by alleviating the barrage of questions you receive onsite and will manage expectations of your event before your attendees arrive. It is one of the many ways utilizing an event app can save you time and make your event super successful!

If you want help getting started, I have some quick links below of resources that can help!

Having an interactive map, especially for an exhibitor hall is super helpful.  We also like to add where the closest bathroom is to all our main rooms.
Registration hours are also a must for an FAQ page, and an email contact for when Reg is closed.

Thanks for sharing! We use a mobile app at our 2 largest events each year and it's great. My favorite functionality is the game as it really gets people engaged. I need to utilize polls more often for engagement too, but the process seems a bit complicated for the speaker.

    Hi Rebecca,

I get a lot of questions around how to best coordinate with presenters in using polls. It does require a bit of pre-planning, but onsite, the speaker shouldn't have much (if anything) to manage with the polls. The way to make it easiest on the presenter would be to coordinate with them ahead of time to get their PPT presentation, along with their poll questions and responses. Your team would then enter those into the app (the polls will show up on the homescreen automatically when the session takes place). For the live results display, you're able to download a slide and embed it directly in the speaker's PPT. So, during the speaker presentation, all they need to do is click to the next slide and the live results from the app will display!

Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to watching your presentation. The top feature that really drives engagement at our events is the social sharing aspect; posting photos in the event feed is the first thing most users do when they first log in. That and gamification have really helped drive excitement at our event and with app usage, because we use the event feed as a communication tool of sorts.

There's so many good reasons for a mobile app -- making it an integral part of getting around, networking, getting updates. Gamification and award opportunities are normally a good draw. I also however feel people are over downloading an app for a one day conference and it really needs to be made worth it. We've moved towards not having any printed agendas, but sometimes that isn't enough. One thing that was always nice about CrowdCompass is that there's also a 'web' based version so people don't necessarily have to download an app and take up space on their phone to be able to still engage and get everything.

At first when I started building our event apps I was convinced that the more content, the better. I have learned over the years that this is not the case and value is better than volume. By prioritizing navigation icons and using top level filters to filter content you are more likely to have your most important content viewed by more attendees. I also find using groups to segment content is a great way to make groups of attendees feel exclusive and important. Lastly, the use of push notifications, interactive maps, and monetizing your app costs via sponsorships are all very important aspects as well!
