Hi Renee,
I would be curious what you mean regarding relying less on their slides. Slides should be used as a "prompt" to guide the speaker in sharing their content, rather than writing it all out in slides. However, if their presentation is more educational in nature, there are some times where a lot of content on a slide may be appropriate (ie, they are providing the deck after the presentation and the content is needed/useful for the recipient to have in entirety... and it saves them having to take a lot of notes).
Also... what software are you using? We are currently using Zoom, which only allows for a tiny video of the speaker and a full screen of the slide, but we will be moving to Cvent Studio next year, which gives you so much more flexibility with what is viewed on the screen.
There are all kinds of "best practices" out there if you do a Google search; here are a few:

Subject: Speaker PPT Over Dependence - Guideline Ideas Appreciated
We are trying to convince our presenters to rely less on their PPT slides and would like to put guidelines in place. Looking for ideas to guide them to use less slides, less information on those slides and the advantages of depending less on their PPTs. Most of our presenters are seasoned and have always used the slides to convey all of the content. For live events you see the presenter and the slides but virtual can be challenging.
All ideas are appreciated!
