Happy Wednesday everyone! Let's kickstart with our next edition of the Tip of the Week discussion! Virtual team building activities are online group activities for the development of remote teams that work together. Let's walk through some tips and tricks on how to accomplish this through virtual team-building activities.

Why is virtual team building important?

A team won't perform efficiently or effectively if its members are not motivated. With increased work-from-home policies and less in-person interaction, it is very easy for employees to become discouraged. It takes planning to hop on a Zoom virtual call, and with that planning comes a loss of some of that natural bonding that occurs in the office.

Tools for successful virtual team building

Investing in the right technology and tools to make your virtual team bonding experiences as seamless as possible.

Learn more about the Cvent Virtual Event Platform.

    Virtual streaming provider

For team meetings or bonding sessions, make sure that you have a virtual streaming provider that will allow you to video conference with multiple members of your team at once.

    Mobile app

Having a mobile app dedicated to your team is a wonderful option. Your team's mobile app can help add some fun to team meetings. Include polls and quizzes within the app to encourage team bonding.

    Survey platform

Finally, consider having a platform that hosts surveys. After a team meeting, encourage your team members to complete the survey with feedback and suggestions for future team-building activities.

    Mobile app gamification

With your team's mobile app, create fun games to keep your team members engaged throughout the day. For example, create a scavenger hunt where your team members must take photos of items around their remote workspace. Here are some ideas of things to add to your scavenger hunt:

    1. Your favorite coffee mug

    1. Your favorite at-home work buddy (pet, family member, friend, etc.)

    1. Your lunch

    1. Your remote workplace set-up

    1. Your agenda book/calendar

Fun polls and quizzes throughout the meeting

For larger team meetings, utilize a mobile app to keep attendees involved. Here are some fun questions to ask your team:

    1. What is your go-to work drink: coffee or tea?

    1. What is your favorite afternoon snack?

    1. Would you rather go to the beach or the mountains on your next vacation?

    1. What is your favorite movie/TV show?

Team happy hours and coffee breaks

If you want to set aside time to bond with your team outside of work, a happy hour or coffee break is a great way to do so. Schedule a half-hour on your team's calendars and try not to talk about work.

    Team board game night

If you can find a night during the week when your team members can each set aside a few hours, this is a super fun option. Find a virtual streaming provider that allows you to have breakout rooms so you can divide into teams and strategize separately. Below are some good options:

    1. Apples to Apples

    1. Life

    1. Clue

    1. Scrabble

    1. Card games

    Questions for you!

    - How often does your team gets involved in virtual team-building activities?  Maybe once a quarter
    - Share some of your team-building activity ideas with the group here: various random questions to kick off calls (such as "What's the greatest item you take on trips?", "What's your favorite show or movie you're embarrassed to watch?", "Where's your dream vacation?", etc.); I also enjoy scavenger hunts in groups or pairs, trivia competitions (especially when the questions involve the attendees), and random competitions (such as the Olympics from The Office)

    - How often does your team gets involved in virtual team-building activities? A couple times a year
    - Share some of your team-building activity ideas with the group here: We have a lot of fun with online bingo! We'll bring in a special guest to call the numbers, but it all goes through myfreebingcards.com.  Really easy for someone to facilitate on the backend. I also like to include a "Question of the Day" at the beginning of weekly team calls; the questions are usually funny and totally random, which adds a lot of personalization to our meetings.

    This is Great!

How often does your team gets involved in virtual team-building activities? We don't but I want to start this. In the summer most of us are remote and the meetings become "chat" sessions and drag.
    - Share some of your team-building activity ideas with the group here  The best one is really just going around the team (we are only four people) and doing a check in. If we are remote in a "fun" place showing it off (aka my boss is in the mountains with a GORGEOUS view).
