Happy mid-week all! Let's kickstart with our next edition of the Tip of the Week discussion!

At one point, we have all been Struggling to encourage innovation, productivity, and engagement through your virtual event program. Why not add a dopamine-inducing element, tried and tested by educators, scientists and trainers worldwide - tap into the principles of gamification

In the physical world, incentivizing attendees to attend conference sessions by rewarding points, promoting learning by engaging with content through play, or creating competitive scenarios to help facilitate better networking, are all irreplaceable live engagement strategies.

Nevertheless, virtual gamification also breaks up the monotony of staring at a screen and because it works on the principle of rewards and reinforcement, planners can get really creative or turn to sponsors to provide prizes.

Here are some creative gamification tips and ideas for you-

    • Virtual escape rooms: Online escape rooms encourage individuals to work together so they are great for promoting teamwork and networking.
    • Virtual scavenger hunt: At a physical event, a scavenger hunt can increase attendee engagement with exhibitor booths. It can work similarly at a virtual event. Create a list of items that attendees need to find on the virtual trade show floor or a list of keywords and 'bingo' phrases attendees can collect during the conference program.
    • Polls: Polls can provide planners with valuable information. Encourage people to take the polls by rewarding points for each one taken. The more polls, the more points, and at the end of the event, the most points win

You can also Track participation with the event app or platform. This means you can track attendee behavior and gain greater insights into which elements of your event are the most successful.

    Question for you:

    • What kind of gamification activity do you often use in your Virtual event?
    • Share your hack of how you keep your virtual event program engaged.

In the past we have just used the polls, but for our next event we are excited to introduce some prizes for engagement & some virtual networking options - an Escape Room, Whiskey tasting, and Beer tasting! We definitely miss the connection that happens at in person events, so I'm excited to offer these virtual networking opportunities to see how our attendees can engage now that we are sticking with virtual. Furthermore, this allows us some additional opportunities for sponsor engagement & visibility!

At the bigger events they do a few times a year they keep people engaged by doing raffles ranging from company spa package to TV raffles.

Similar to Jonathan at my previous company we did a live "Spin the Wheel" which was an online program that was shown on the screen.

    • What kind of gamification activity do you often use in your Virtual event? Unfortunately outside of polls we don't do much We did host a virtual cocktial once and I've been in attendance at similar that have been fun. We also tried on a team call, not quite a conference, a holiday scavanger hunt where you were given a certain time to find certain items and whoever came back with the most on the list won.

Gamification is a great way to drive engagement and have fun! We've used polls, app activity leaderboards and virtual scavenger hunts in the past. One "hack" with the virtual scavenger hunt is to not have all of the challenges launched at the start, but save some to launch around a particular event to drive engagement - for example, launch a challenge right when the vendor expo opens to drive more vendor networking - and create some buzz around it so that there is greater excitement.

We recently used Microsoft Forms for a quiz that attendees filled out during a virtual session. Everyone that took part in the quiz was entered to win a prize. At the end of the session, we were able to show the results of the quiz (how many people picked which answers) and reviewed the correct answers. This increased awareness of the session content and providing the quiz at the beginning kept people engaged by encouraging them to answer the questions as they heard the content.

What kind of gamification activity do you often use in your Virtual event?
We used CrowdCompass gamification prize incentive for engagement. Then polls and social media posting walls.

Share your hack of how you keep your virtual event program engaged.
Sadly, we use the hub and do not engage audience very well!
