Honestly, I look at cards as a way to bring more color and content to the home page, especially for events where I don't have featured speakers, featured sessions, or other things that would normally appear there. We've used them to link to information about a special event taking place during the conference or a document with information they should know on arrival day and/or departure day; I usually do one with a link to the 10-day forecast for the area; sometimes I create a page of contact numbers for staff so attendees know who to contact if they have an issue onsite. Basically, the cards are a way to highlight anything important you want people to see and offer more flexibility than just a quick link.
