Should I use a barcode or a QR code, they both seem to do the same function. 

It kind of depends on what you are using it for - check in, attendee networking, sponsor lead scanning, etc. Barcodes usually require a specific type of scanner to read, so you would need to provide those. QR code readers are widely available, so they work best (for us) for networking, session scanning, sponsor scanning, and things like that. 

I found QR codes easier to scan but I use barcodes in emails. I typically don't scan emails unless there is an issue.
