I like to use the multiple columns in sections to keep text condensed and easier to read on a computer. Then the columns will stack when the website is looked at on mobile. I use simple colors in the backgrounds to alternate sections and make it easier to feel the page go by when scrolling on a long page.
For accessibility purposes, I never use spacers, which a screen reader would interpret as an image without alt text. Instead, I use the top & bottom margin in the widget itself (either the whole section or a specific text widget).
Here is an event I designed on Flex at my previous job. They have since gone with another event software, so I don't feel bad sharing it. You'll have to close the window saying "this event is over" to access the website:
