You' might discover that while the session emails works for those who have registered for those sessions, CVENT does NOT let you filter for those that HAVE NOT registered for the session.. ya know.. in case you want to upsell the session to people who haven't signed up yet.
Like me, this might put you back in the same problem.

I just found out if the emails are specific to sessions that are optional you can set up Sessions Emails. That works for us! thanks

One of my hacks is to use a custom contact field as an advanced filter.
Create a custom contact field and name it whatever you want. I generally use C-EMAIL1, C-EMAIL2. C so I remember it's a contact field.
You can use the Registrant Details report to see who registered for an optional item
Export email, first name, last name. Add a column and name it C-EMAIL1 (or whatever you are choose).
Add text that makes sense to you in that column. Save.
Import them back into your contact list based on email address.
Then you can use an advanced filter to locate those invites. This only works for invitees and not guests.
You can also use conditional content blocks in your email.
I'm hoping someone has a better way.

I need to email those who selected an optional item.
I can add a flag to a custom contact field by exporting those who have an optional item and importing the flag back into their contact record.
Then use the custom contact field as an advanced filter.
Just wondering if there is a better way?
What I really would like is an optional item email similar to session emails.
