You are absolutely right in what you are thinking. Since group registrations are considered as individual registrations, the only way to add this respective person with the group is to cancel his registration (Change registration type if required) and then register him again with the group. Or if the group has already registered, the group leader can log back in the registration and add the respective person as group member.

Hi everyone!
I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I figured I would ask just in case there's an easier solve!
We just had a person register for an event as a solo attendee, when he should have waited and registered as part of his company's group. The planner wants him to be added to the group once they register. Is this even possible? I know you can change a registration type, but I'm thinking to do this we would need to unregister him as a solo attendee, then re-register him within the group.
If anyone knows a better method, please share! :)
