I'm trying to figure out a way to apply a discount for the registration fee (admission item) to our first-time attendees without applying the discount to members who are not first-time attendees.  Support said there's not a way to link a discount to a question (i.e. they answer yes that they are a first-time attendee and the discount is automatically applied). Right now, we have to manually apply the discount to those who answer the question that they are a first-time attendee. Thoughts?

To automatically apply a discount there needs to be something you can use from the Advanced Filters list.
One way going with what you are already doing, make your question a Custom Contact question.
Is this your first time?  Yes.  Custom Contact field equals Yes, they get the discount.
