Hi Jess,
I'm not sure if you are referring to the registration process portion of the site, or the website itself, but I try to add photos whenever possible to make it more visually appealing (definitely more on the website, but I have added photos to registration before too). I like to do multi-column photos (3 or 4) with an accent color background to make a band of photos. If I'm doing two columns with photo and text content, I usually set the column to 66%/33% spacing instead of 50%/50% so the picture has more room and is larger. I also use photos in the background of the section with text imposed on top of them, but this can be tricky to make the spacing and text positioning work for both desktop view and mobile view so there's a lot of trial and error and testing.
For registration, I just try to make sure the flow is consistent (all registration questions together, travel elements together, etc.) so the attendee is guided through registration in a cohesive manner. And as you mentioned, instructional text is great! Things that seem obvious to us as builders don't always translate on the end-user side so you can never give them too much information!
