You had me until I got to tables. :)
You can password protect the event registration. Then use the language manage module to change the text to say, registration will open on this day.
Text ID: EventGuestSide_WebsitePassword_HelpText__resx
Default: Enter the passcode and click Submit.
Custom text: Registration opens Dec 1, 10:00 AM.
If you know who they will be attending, you can create an invitee list and in site designer allow only those on the list to register.
And reading your question again, I am probably totally off base but it may spure another idea by someone. :)

Subject: Large Event Registration
Hi Community,
I am looking to run a large event, where there will be a number of 'Host' attendees.
Hosts will be known prior to the event, therefore can be preregistered, however regular Attendees will be selected by Hosts at any point in the lead up to the event, and may register through a Cvent registration site.
The issue I am running into is I cannot determine a way to assign 'Tables' to a host, with a set amount of seats per table.
This would ideally grant each Host's party a certain capacity for attendees to prevent overbooking.
One potential solution I thought of would be to provide each Host with a 'password', which when entered by an attendee into a field would allow them to register, and assign them a corresponding Registration Type with set capacity. I am unsure however whether such a thing can be set up.
Ideally, without a Host, an attendee would not be able to register.
Any ideas on how I could pull this off?
Thanks!
Cameron
